Colour-matched block paving specialists

Block Paving Reinstatement Colour-Matched, Invisibly Joined

We don't use 'nearest available' blocks. We source matched blocks direct from Marshalls, Brett, Tegula, and Formpave, lay them to the original pattern, and finish with kiln-dried jointing sand to BS 7533.

The Process Step by Step

Every block paving reinstatement follows a clear, auditable sequence. Here is exactly what happens at each stage.

1

Block Identification and Sampling

Before any reinstatement work begins, USP lifts one block as a sample. We photograph the laying pattern and bond from multiple angles, check the underside of the block for a manufacturer stamp, and record the exact dimensions. The sample and photographs are sent to the supplier to confirm the product range and current colourway. This matters because different factories produce slightly different colourways even within the same product name, and production batches can drift over time. A block marked "Marshalls Tegula Pennant Grey" from one batch may not match a current Pennant Grey order exactly. Getting identification right at this stage is what separates a visible repair from an invisible one.

2

Direct Manufacturer Sourcing

USP holds live trade accounts with Marshalls, Brett Landscaping, Formpave, Stonemarket, and Tobermore. This means we order blocks directly from the factory rather than through a builders merchant, which gives us access to the current production batch and accurate colour data. Where the original range has been discontinued, we use our trade contacts to search for remaining old stock or recovered blocks. If no direct match can be sourced, we present 2 to 3 closest-match options with sample photos to the client in writing before any blocks arrive on site. No substitute is ever used without written client approval.

3

Sub-base, Laying Course, and Re-Laying

The excavated area is formed to the correct depth and profile. A Type 1 MOT granular sub-base is placed and compacted in layers to 150mm for domestic driveways, or 225 to 300mm for HGV-trafficked commercial areas, following BS 7533 Part 3 guidance. A 30 to 50mm clean sharp sand laying course is then screeded across the prepared sub-base. Blocks are laid to the original pattern, whether that is 45 or 90 degree herringbone, stretcher bond, basketweave, or running bond, with string lines used throughout to maintain true coursing. The edge of the reinstated area is cut in tight against the existing paving to hide the joint line.

4

Kiln-Dried Jointing Sand and Finish

Once all blocks are laid, kiln-dried jointing sand is brushed into all joints in multiple passes. The pavement is vibrated with a plate compactor fitted with a rubber sole plate to settle the sand and seat the blocks into the laying course. Further sand is brushed in, vibrated again, and swept clean to leave a crisp surface finish. Edge restraints (either a concrete haunched kerb or a proprietary aluminium edging system) are checked for integrity before sign-off. A final photographic record of the completed reinstatement is added to the project handover pack, with the 2-year workmanship guarantee issued in writing.

Block Paving Reinstatement FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Discontinued ranges are common, especially for driveways installed more than a decade ago. USP has direct trade contacts with Marshalls, Brett, Formpave, Stonemarket and Tobermore, and we can often source old stock or recovered blocks that match the original. Where no match is available, we present the 2 to 3 closest-match options in writing with sample photos so you can make an informed decision before any blocks arrive on site.
Yes. Where the original blocks have been lifted carefully and remain in sound condition, we clean them and re-lay them as part of the reinstatement. This keeps the colour and texture consistent with the surrounding area. Any blocks that are cracked, chipped or heavily worn are replaced with manufacturer-matched stock. Re-using original blocks is always our first preference because weathering makes an exact new-block match impossible.
Before any blocks are ordered, we lift a sample block and check the underside for a manufacturer stamp. We photograph the pattern, bond, and colourway in daylight and submit those details to the supplier. Different factory batches of the same product name can vary slightly in colour, so we request current-batch samples and sign-off from you before placing the order. No blocks arrive on site until you have approved the match in writing.
For domestic driveways we install 150mm of Type 1 MOT granular sub-base, fully compacted in layers. For commercial and HGV-trafficked areas we increase this to 225mm or 300mm depending on the design loading. A 30 to 50mm sharp sand laying course is then placed and screeded before the blocks are laid. All layers are compacted using a vibrating plate compactor to BS 7533 Part 3 requirements.
Yes. We photograph the original laying pattern before lifting any blocks, and the team re-lay to the same bond on completion. Common patterns include 45 degree herringbone, 90 degree herringbone, stretcher bond, basketweave, and running bond. String lines are used throughout to maintain true coursing, and the transition between the reinstated area and the existing paving is worked in so the joint is invisible.
All USP block paving reinstatement work is covered by a 2-year workmanship guarantee. This covers settlement, laying-pattern integrity, and jointing sand retention. The block manufacturers typically provide their own product guarantees on top of this, and we pass those warranties on to you as part of the project handover pack.
