Matched facing brick reinstatement specialists

Brick Wall Reinstatement Matched Brick. Invisible Tie-In.

When a utility service has to come through a boundary wall or garden wall, the quality of the brick match is the difference between an invisible tie-in and an obvious patch. We source matched facing brick, mix the mortar to colour, and rebuild to the original bond.

The Process Step by Step

Every brick wall rebuild follows a clear, auditable sequence. Here is exactly what happens at each stage.

1

Brick Sample and Sourcing

We take a single brick sample from the wall, photograph the face under natural light, and note the dimensions. Imperial 8 5/8 x 4 1/8 x 2 5/8 is common on Victorian and Edwardian housing; metric 215 x 102.5 x 65 is the standard for post-1980 construction. We check the frog and any maker's marks on the underside, since these often tell us the original works and make sourcing faster. Samples are sent to specialist brick-matching services at Imperial Bricks, Northcot, and Ketley, and to reclamation yards where the original brick is out of production. A match or a blended match is usually available within 7 to 14 days. Where no close match exists, we commission a custom blend to replicate the colour variation of the original wall.

2

Matched Mortar Mix and Colour

The mortar line is as visible as the brick face, so it gets equal attention. We match the existing mix first, which is typically 1:1:6 cement:lime:sand for heritage walls, and 1:4 or 1:5 cement:sand for post-war construction. Lime is essential on older walls since a hard cement-rich mortar will damage soft historic brick. Colour is matched using oxide pigments blended into the mix until it reads correctly when cured. Joint finish is matched too: flush, bucket handle, weather struck, or recessed, depending on the wall. A small test panel is built on site and cured for a full colour check under dry conditions before the main rebuild begins. Nothing moves forward until you have signed off on the panel.

3

Rebuild to Original Bond and Detail

Before a brick is laid, the bond pattern is identified from the existing wall and continued through the patch. English, Flemish, stretcher, and Sussex bond are all common on UK work and each one has to be read and repeated exactly so the rebuild disappears into the wall. Perpend lines are kept true so the vertical joints line up with the existing work. Wall ties are installed to BS EN 845-1 using stainless steel ties with a minimum 225mm embedment into both the existing masonry and the new work. DPC continuity is checked across the patch and restored with the correct DPC material and any flashing that was present. Weep holes are opened where the wall has cavity construction so drainage paths are preserved.

4

Snag, Cure, and Sign-Off

We return 7 days after the rebuild to check the wall under dry conditions. Efflorescence, pointing, colour match, and joint finish are all inspected, and any remedial pointing is done before sign-off. Photographs of the finished work are taken for your records. A 2-year written warranty is issued covering the rebuild workmanship, pointing, wall ties, and DPC continuity. We supply aftercare advice for the first-winter check: new lime mortar and matched brick can throw a light efflorescence bloom in the first few months, which is normal and brushes off dry. If anything needs attention inside the guarantee period we come back and put it right. No quibble, no extra visit charge.

Brick Wall Reinstatement FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

We take a single sample brick from the wall, photograph the face, and record dimensions. For Victorian and Edwardian work this is typically an imperial 8 5/8 x 4 1/8 x 2 5/8 brick; for post-1980 work it is metric 215 x 102.5 x 65. We check for frogs and maker's marks on the underside, then send the sample to specialist suppliers such as Imperial Bricks, Northcot, or Ketley. A match or blended match is usually available within 7 to 14 days.
If the exact brick is out of production, we source reclaimed bricks of the same period and region, or commission a blended match from specialist suppliers. For very specific heritage blends we can use multiple brick sources mixed on site to recreate the colour and texture variation of the original wall. Reclaimed options usually give the closest visual match on older walls.
The mortar line is as visible as the brick, so it gets the same attention. We match the original mix ratio (typically 1:1:6 cement:lime:sand for heritage walls, 1:4 or 1:5 cement:sand for post-war) and tint with oxide pigments to get the colour right. A small test panel is built and cured before the main rebuild so you can sign off on the match under dry conditions.
Yes. We have experience with listed and heritage brickwork including lime mortar rebuilds, traditional bond patterns, and matched reclaimed brick sourcing. Where listed building consent is in place, we work to the conditions set by the conservation officer. We can also provide a method statement for heritage work on request.
For a small garden wall or boundary wall patch of 1 to 2 square metres, the rebuild itself takes 1 to 2 days once the matched brick and mortar are on site. Lead time for brick matching and sourcing is typically 7 to 14 days. We return after 7 days for a snag and sign-off visit to check pointing, efflorescence, and colour match.
Every brick wall reinstatement carries a 2-year written warranty covering the rebuild workmanship, pointing, wall ties, and DPC continuity. The guarantee is issued on sign-off and we supply aftercare advice for the first-winter efflorescence and staining check.
