New Commercial Gas Connection: Process, Timeline and Cost

A new commercial gas connection is a multi-stage project that touches design, planning, civil works, and regulated metering. Get it right and it runs in the background of your wider build programme. Get it wrong and it blocks practical completion.

This guide covers the full process for commercial gas connections in the UK: what to do first, who to contact, what it costs, and how long it actually takes.

When You Need a New Commercial Gas Connection

New commercial gas connections are required for new-build commercial premises, change-of-use projects where existing infrastructure cannot support the new demand, and upgrades where a site has outgrown its current supply. Typical scenarios include retail and hospitality units, restaurants and commercial kitchens, industrial and commercial facilities, care homes, hotels, and schools.

The trigger is always load. If your intended equipment demands more than the existing service can deliver at the required pressure, you need either an upgrade or a new connection.

Step One: Calculate the Load

Gas load is measured in cubic metres per hour (m3/hr) or kilowatts (kW). The load determines meter size, service pipe diameter, and whether you need a low-pressure (LP), medium-pressure (MP) or intermediate-pressure (IP) connection.

For commercial kitchens, sum the rated input of every gas appliance. For space heating, use the boiler rated input. For industrial processes, work from the manufacturer’s data sheets.

Undersizing at this stage is the most expensive mistake in the project. It is far cheaper to specify a larger service at the design stage than to upgrade it after commissioning.

Step Two: Identify the Right Connection Provider

You have two realistic routes to a new commercial gas connection in the UK.

The first is the incumbent Gas Distribution Network (GDN). There are four GDNs covering the UK: Cadent (North West, West Midlands, East of England, London), Northern Gas Networks (North East, Yorkshire, northern Cumbria), SGN (Scotland and Southern England), and Wales and West Utilities. The GDN owns and maintains the gas main in your street.

The second is a Utility Infrastructure Provider (UIP) or an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT). These companies compete for the contestable portion of connection work, which includes design, civil works, and asset installation. They often deliver faster timelines and more competitive pricing than going directly to the GDN.

Step Three: Request a Quote

Good quote requests include the site address, a location plan, the intended meter position, the gas load in m3/hr or kW, the building use, the required completion date, and any site access constraints.

The quote should itemise service pipe, main extension if required, meter and regulator, kiosk if required, traffic management, reinstatement, and the non-contestable charge paid to the GDN.

Expect quotes to arrive within one to four weeks. Complex jobs with high loads or MP connections sit at the longer end.

Step Four: Design and Approval

Once accepted, the connection moves into design. The designer produces a CAD drawing showing the service route, main extension if any, meter position, and reinstatement specification. On public highway, the design must comply with NRSWA and be approved by the local highway authority before work begins.

For IP and high-load MP connections, additional GDN approvals are required because the connection affects the wider network pressure profile.

Allow two to six weeks for design and approval.

Step Five: Civil Works and Installation

On-site installation runs through a predictable sequence.

First, traffic management is set up on the public highway.

Second, the trench is excavated, usually 600mm to 1200mm deep depending on surface type and ground conditions.

Third, the polyethylene service pipe is laid, jointed, and pressure-tested.

Fourth, the main extension, if any, is laid, tested, and tied into the existing main.

Fifth, the trench is reinstated to NRSWA standard: a binder course immediately, surface course within the notice period.

Sixth, the meter housing kiosk, if required, is installed at the property boundary.

Most commercial jobs complete the civil works in one to four weeks.

Step Six: Meter Installation and Commissioning

A registered meter installer fits the meter and regulator, performs a tightness test, purges the installation, and commissions the supply.

At this point the connection is live and you can begin commissioning your own appliances.

Realistic Timelines

The honest answer for a standard commercial gas connection is twelve to twenty weeks from enquiry to live meter.

Complex projects with significant main extensions, medium-pressure or intermediate-pressure connections, or sites with heavy traffic management can stretch to thirty weeks or longer.

The controllable portion is roughly half the timeline. The non-contestable GDN steps, highway authority approvals, and meter provision timelines are less flexible.

Cost Ranges

A small commercial connection (U25 meter, short service pipe, standard LP) on an existing street typically costs £3,000 to £7,000.

A medium commercial connection (U40 or U65 meter, modest main extension, LP to MP upgrade) runs £7,000 to £20,000.

A large commercial or light industrial connection (U100 or larger, MP connection, kiosk) sits between £15,000 and £60,000.

Heavy industrial or IP connections are priced project-by-project and can exceed £100,000.

Common Pitfalls

The most frequent problems on commercial gas connections are load errors discovered after design, meter position changes late in the programme, clashing utility installations that force re-excavation, and traffic management approvals that arrive later than expected.

Plan for each one. Fix the load early. Fix the meter position early. Share your utility coordination drawings with every contractor on site. Apply for highway authority approval as soon as the design is signed off.
